20i are a relative newcomer to the world of hosting, but they are backed by the two founders of 123-reg, Webfusion and more recently Heart Internet.

There recent investment in software and hardware means their platform is using the most up to date stack available.

It also means their server contention rate (the number of websites you are sharing a server with) is going to be small – that’s a good thing.

20i are very much focused on their reseller hosting plan, but they also offer:

• WordPress hosting
• Shared web hosting
• VPS
• Website builder
• Domain names

Rather than use an off the shelf solution like cPanel, 20i have developed their own control panel called ‘My20i’.

The design of the control panel is pretty much the same as cPanel and Heart Internet (the business 20i founders set-up beforehand).

20i WordPress hosting

The 20i WordPress Hosting platform is 100% SSD. This means the servers can access data must faster than traditional disks, resulting in a more stable and faster loading website.

The 20i WordPress hosting plans start at £5.99 per month for their Personal plan, with the mid-range Professional plan costing £14.99 per month and their Agency plan coming in at £34.99 per month.

The key differentiation between the three plans are the number of WordPress sites you can host, your web space allowance and monthly bandwidth.

20i shared web hosting

20I’s shared hosting platform boasts two features that make it largely unique in the web hosting industry (although other hosts are catching up): Autoscaling and load balancing.

Autoscaling literally means that resources scale automatically. Bandwidth, memory and processing power is scaled up or down instantly – depending on demand.

The ideas here is that if there’s a surge in traffic, your website will continue to offer the same fast experience for every user.

If there is a spike in demand and your shared hosting ‘neighbours’ become busy, it doesn’t affect your site speed. Busy sites are isolated from others on their own servers.

Load balancing shares traffic across servers, analysing traffic load and balance it across multiple servers when needed. Load balancing mitigates failover: if a server goes down, your site will be moved to another, so it stays online.

All three plans come with 70+ One Click Installs, Malware Scanning, Website Builder, Free Website Migration, Free CDN, and Website Acceleration Suite. The top two plans also come with free daily backups.

All hosting plans come with an impressive sounding 70+ one-click install apps like WordPress, Joomla and Magento. The truth is, you’re very unlikely to use most of these with the exception of WordPress.

A note about ‘unlimited hosting’. Like 20i, you’ll sometimes see web hosts claiming to offer shared web hosting packages with unlimited web space, bandwidth/traffic, emails etc.

Obviously nothing can literally be limited, but what they are saying is, they have so many resources that you can’t possible max them out.

Now, for 95% of customers who choose shared web hosting this is true. Problems arise when a website starts to outgrow shared web hosting, or a customer who should use a server takes the ‘unlimited’ claim literally and sees this as a cheaper way of getting the same thing.

If you are a shared web hosting customer with a small to medium sized website, and little in the way of database requirements (e.g. a blog), don’t get put off by an unlimited claim, it really just means you get a lot of resources and you’ll never have to think about using them up.

20i domain names

20i have one of the best domain searches I’ve come across. it is lightning fast and they have pretty much every extension going available.

Their prices are very low, and no based on short-term discounts to draw you in and then clobber you with high priced renewals.
